From Theory to Action: Key Insights from "Advancing Credible Nature-based Solutions (NbS) " at WEF 2026
On January 21, 2026, at the Climate Hub Davos, IUCN and In-Finitude SA brought together key stakeholders to move Nature based Solutions from concept to investable reality.
🎯 The common thread. From credibility to large scale action
In light of the alarming figures from the Global Risks Report 2025, with biodiversity loss ranked as the second most severe risk over a 10 year horizon and 62 percent of experts anticipating turbulent times, our session demonstrated that solutions exist, that frameworks are operational, and that the private sector is making concrete commitments.
🔑 Key presentation highlights.
Professor Thomas Anderson (IKED) presented the systemic diagnosis. The dichotomy between the diffuse benefits provided by nature and the concentrated gains of the economy creates a fundamental asymmetry. His solution. Directly connecting investors to projects through technology in order to bypass financial intermediaries whose performance indicators are disconnected from long term challenges. Reality. 97 percent of financing in Europe still comes from public sources.
Charles Karangwa (IUCN) presented the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions as an antidote to greenwashing. 8 criteria and 27 indicators developed with more than 800 practitioners across over 100 countries. Already used by Société Générale, Coca Cola and development banks to assess the credibility of investments.
Marc Vogt (In-Finitude SA) unveiled the Swiss NbS Hub. A collaborative platform that translates the IUCN standard into operational practice. Key figure. Investing 1 dollar in Nature based Solutions generates a return of 3 dollars in the Alps.
Aurélie Fallon Saint Lo (AXA) and Henri Douche (SCOR) announced a major partnership. The first insurance product dedicated to ecological restoration. It protects NbS investments against physical risks, with independent rating provided by the Society for Ecological Restoration.
💡 Responses to the risks identified in the Global Risks Report 2025.
- Biodiversity loss. The IUCN standard requires measurable biodiversity benefits.
- Extreme weather events. SCOR AXA insurance protects restoration investments.
- Lack of private capital. Digital platforms and the Swiss NbS Hub facilitate access.
- Greenwashing. The 27 indicators and independent rating establish robust benchmarks.
- Fragmentation. The regional hub model promotes the exchange of data and expertise.
🙏 Many thanks to all speakers as well as the panellists Anicet Munyehirwe (Twahirwa Foundation), René Benguerel (Blueyou) and Paola Geremicca (IUCN) for the moderation.
